Creamy and cheesy au gratin potatoes, baked to perfection with layers of thinly sliced potatoes and a rich cheese sauce.

  • 4 large potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish with butter.
  3. Layer half the potato slices in the dish.
  4. Sprinkle half the cheddar and Parmesan cheese over the potatoes.
  5. Repeat with the remaining potatoes and cheese.
  6. In a saucepan, heat cream, milk, butter, garlic, salt, pepper, and nutmeg until warm.
  7. Pour the cream mixture over the potatoes.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and bake for another 20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  10. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a crispier top, broil for the last 3-5 minutes.
  • Substitute Gruyère for cheddar for a different flavor.
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 3 days.
