A simple and delicious Italian dessert with layers of coffee-soaked ladyfingers and creamy mascarpone filling.

Ingredients

  • 6 egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup white sugar
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1 1/4 cups heavy cream
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 pound mascarpone cheese
  • 1/4 cup strong brewed coffee, room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons rum
  • 24 ladyfinger cookies
  • 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Whisk egg yolks and sugar in a heatproof bowl.
  2. Place the bowl over a pot of simmering water and whisk until thick.
  3. Remove from heat and let cool.
  4. Beat heavy cream and vanilla until stiff peaks form.
  5. Fold mascarpone into the egg mixture, then gently fold in the whipped cream.
  6. Mix coffee and rum in a shallow dish.
  7. Quickly dip each ladyfinger into the coffee mixture and layer them in a dish.
  8. Spread half the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers.
  9. Repeat the layers and dust the top with cocoa powder.
  10. Chill for at least 4 hours before serving.

Notes

  • Use freshly brewed coffee for the best flavor.
  • Chill the mixing bowl before whipping the cream.
  • For a non-alcoholic version, omit the rum.
