Soft dinner rolls flavored with nutty brown butter and aromatic sage. Perfect for holiday meals or any dinner.

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons fresh sage leaves, chopped
  • 1 cup whole milk, warm
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter for brushing

Instructions

  1. Brown the butter in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add sage leaves and cook until fragrant. Remove from heat and let cool.
  2. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Add the brown butter mixture, egg, salt, and 2 cups of flour. Mix until smooth.
  4. Gradually add remaining flour until a soft dough forms.
  5. Knead on a floured surface for 8 minutes until elastic.
  6. Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour until doubled.
  7. Punch down dough. Divide into 12 equal pieces. Shape into balls.
  8. Place rolls in a greased 9×13 inch baking dish. Cover and let rise for 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat oven to 375°F.
  10. Brush rolls with melted butter. Bake for 20-22 minutes until golden brown.
  11. Brush with more butter if desired. Serve warm.

Notes

  • Use fresh sage for best flavor. Dried sage can be substituted but use half the amount.
  • Brown butter can be made ahead and refrigerated. Warm slightly before using.
  • Rolls are best served fresh. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
