Ingredients
Scale
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup strong brewed coffee, cooled
1/2 cup buttermilk
For frosting: 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
2 tablespoons strong brewed coffee
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add softened butter, eggs, vanilla extract, coffee, and buttermilk. Beat with an electric mixer on medium speed for 2 minutes until smooth.
Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Let cake cool in pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
For frosting: Beat softened butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, beating until smooth. Add coffee and vanilla, beat until fluffy.
Spread frosting over cooled cake. Slice and serve.
Notes
Use freshly brewed coffee for best flavor.
You can substitute buttermilk with milk mixed with 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice.
Store leftover cake in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days.
