Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • For frosting: 4 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon milk (as needed)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 9×13 inch baking pan.
  2. Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat.
  3. Stir in sugar, molasses, eggs, and vanilla until smooth.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
  5. Add dry ingredients to wet mixture, alternating with hot water. Mix until just combined.
  6. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
  7. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack.
  8. Make frosting: Beat cream cheese and butter until creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla. Beat until smooth. Add milk if needed for spreading consistency.
  9. Spread frosting over cooled brownies. Cut into squares.
