- 1 and 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups white sugar
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 teaspoons baking soda
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 1 cup hot water
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
- Mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
- Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Beat on medium speed for 2 minutes.
- Stir in hot water. The batter will be thin.
- Pour batter into prepared pans.
- Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. A toothpick inserted in center should come out clean.
- Cool in pans for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
- Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting.
Notes
- You can substitute buttermilk with milk plus 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice.
- For a dairy-free version, use plant-based milk and oil instead of butter.
